Introduction
Some scholars using Chromebooks find that some videos do not play on their devices. Other videos do play on the same device, and the same videos that do not play for some scholars do play for other scholars using a loaner device from Great Hearts.
The video may display a preview, but the playback itself is blank.
If this applies in your case, please try to disable hardware acceleration and clear your cache. Great Hearts loaner Chromebooks have hardware acceleration disabled by policy, so these steps do not apply. Note, also that these settings are not accessible on a personal Chromebook while logged in to a child's account. See Google's Family Link documentation for more information on managing your scholar's experience.
Disable Hardware Acceleration
- In your Chrome Browser, navigate to chrome://settings
(Please note that this is different than your device's operating system settings) - Scroll down and select "System"
- Find "Use hardware acceleration when available"
- Turn the toggle off (slide left - it should turn gray)
- Click "relaunch" to reopen all Chrome windows and for changes to take effect.
Clear Cached Data
- In your Chrome Browser, navigate to chrome://settings
(Please note that this is different than your device's operating system settings) - Select "Privacy and security" from the left-hand side navigation menu
- Scroll down and select to "Clear browsing data"
- From the time range drop-down menu, select "all time"
Select all tickbox options: Browsing history, Cookies and other site data, Cached images and files - Click the "Clear Browsing Data" button
Before attempting to view the video again, shut down and power on your Chromebook.
