Taking and uploading photos of handwritten, paper-and-pencil assignments is a common practice at Great Hearts Online, because GHO prioritizes the opportunity for scholars to practice skills like handwriting.
It is possible to take a photo with the webcam that is built into your computer (often called the "Integrated Webcam"), but we recommend using the GHO-provided Okiocam document camera for most occasions.

Step-by-step Instructions to Take and Submit a Photo in a Canvas Assignment
If you are using your Integrated Webcam on your laptop, there is no need to plug the document camera into the USB port of your computer.
If you plan to use your Okiocam document camera to take the photo(s), begin by making sure that the device is plugged the USB port of your computer.
You may need to make sure that the Okiocam is set as the default camera for your browser. When you open the camera in Canvas, you can click on the camera that appears in the browser bar to make sure that Okiocam is selected. For more information about setting the doc cam as the default camera in your browser, please see Setting the Okiocam Document Camera as the Default Camera in Browser Settings for Scholars.
At the bottom of the page, make sure the "File Upload" button is selected. Click the "Webcam Photo" button.
Before you take your photo, please make sure the sheet of paper is nicely centered in the photo view and well lit so that your teacher can see the handwriting on the page.
Click the blue circle button to take the photo.
Add a title to your photo! This is important for keeping organized. Then, click on the blue "Save" button (or "Start Over" if you need a re-take).
Please Note: When adding a title for your photo, leave the file extension at the end. (i.e.: Do note change .png, .jpg, .jpeg, .pdf, etc.) This may cause the photo to not be visible to you and your teachers.
After saving the photo, you should see the photo load. Make sure that you see the green check mark to make sure that the photo is fully loaded!
If you need to upload multiple photos for this assignment, click the "Webcam Photo" button again to repeat the process of taking a photo.
Then, click blue "Submit Assignment" to submit your work!
